Maria Lucila Gomez

Maria Lucila Gomez, born on August 22nd, 1927 in Dabeiba, Colombia, went to her eternal rest on August 25th, 2025 due to complications from dementia. Maria Lucila was preceded in death by her husband of 6 years, Alfredo Antonio Gomez, and her son Alfredo Gomez. She is survived by her son, Ovidio, daughter Ana Rubiela, granddaughter Carolina (Chris) and great-granddaughter Maria Antonia. Growing up in a rural area in the mountains of Colombia, Maria Lucila met and married her one and only love, Alfredo. Their beautiful love story came to an abrupt end when he died of cancer at an early age, leaving Maria Lucila as a 21-year-old widow with three children under four years old. She never remarried because her heart would always belong to her late husband, and so she raised her three children on her own. Overcoming many financial hardships, aided by the generosity of her friends and family, and by the grace of God, she was able to provide for her children and even managed to send all three to private boarding schools. She eventually took a job as the switch operator in the small town of Uramita, a post that she held for 25 years. As a switch operator, she was privy to all of the gossip and sensitive information that was communicated over the phone, but she honorably kept all she heard to herself, thus gaining the respect and trust of the whole town . Maria Lucila had two big transitions in her life. First, she moved from her small town to join the rest of her family in the city of Medellin in 1975, where she became a dedicated homemaker and helped raise her granddaughter Carolina. She routinely opened the doors of her home to those who needed a place to live for a while, and they saw in her a source of guidance and comfort. The second, and even bigger transition, came when she emigrated to the United States in 2003 to once again rejoin her family. She proudly became a United States citizen in 2019, at the age of 92. Her faith was the pillar of her long life, and gave her the strength to overcome all the difficulties she faced. Her love of Our Lord and Our Blessed Mother was a model to those around her. In her later years, her life was structured around her daily prayers and her house work, ora et labora, thereby creating her own domestic religious rule. She was a member of Saint Ita Church, a community of faith that she dearly cherished. Her example of living a Christian life is her greatest legacy to her family, and no doubt her prayers obtained many favors for her loved ones. Though we will sorely miss Maria Lucila’s presence in our lives, her sweet demeanor, the big and small ways in which she showed us her love, and her delicious buñuelos, we know that she will continue to pray intensely for us in heaven as she did here on earth. A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 28th from 4:00-8:00 pm at Barr Funeral Home, 6222 N Broadway, Chicago, IL 60660. The Funeral Service will take place on Friday, August 29th at Saint Ita’s Catholic Church, 5500 N Broadway, Chicago.. There will be a visitation at the church from 11:00-12:00, followed by mass at 12:00 pm. At the conclusion of mass, Maria Lucila’s burial will take place at Mary Hill Cemetery, 8600 N Milwaukee Ave, Niles. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the family to help defray the costs of the funeral arrangements. María Lucila Gómez, nacida el 22 de agosto de 1927 en Dabeiba, Colombia, partió a su eterno descanso el 25 de agosto de 2025 debido a complicaciones asociadas a la demencia. Le precedieron en la muerte su esposo de seis años, Alfredo Antonio Gómez, y su hijo Alfredo Gómez. Le sobreviven su hijo Ovidio, su hija Ana Rubiela, su nieta Carolina (Chris) y su bisnieta María Antonia. Criada en una zona rural de las montañas centrales de Colombia, María Lucila conoció y se casó con su único amor, Alfredo. Su hermosa historia de amor tuvo un final abrupto cuando él falleció de cáncer a temprana edad, dejando a María Lucila viuda a los 21 años con tres hijos menores de cuatro años. Nunca se volvió a casar porque su corazón siempre le perteneció a su difunto esposo, por lo que crió a sus tres hijos sola. Tras superar muchas dificultades económicas, con la ayuda de la generosidad de sus amigos y familiares, y por gracia de Dios, pudo mantener a sus hijos e incluso logró enviarlos a internados privados. Finalmente, consiguió un trabajo como telefonista en el pequeño pueblo de Uramita, puesto que ocupó durante 25 años. Como telefonista, estaba al tanto de toda la información confidencial y los “chismes” que se comunicaban por teléfono, pero, con honor, se guardaba todo lo que oía, ganándose así el respeto y la confianza de todo el pueblo. María Lucila tuvo dos grandes transiciones en su vida. Primero, se mudó de su pequeño pueblo para reunirse con el resto de su familia en Medellín en 1975, donde se convirtió en una dedicada ama de casa y ayudó a criar a su nieta Carolina. Con frecuencia le abrió las puertas a quienes necesitaban un lugar donde vivir por un tiempo, y vieron en ella una guía y una fuente de consuelo. La segunda y aún más importante transición se produjo cuando emigró a Estados Unidos en el 2003 para reunirse con su familia. Orgullosamente se convirtió en ciudadana estadounidense en 2019, a la edad de 92 años. La fe de Maria Lucila fue el pilar de su larga vida y le dio la fuerza para superar todas las dificultades que se le presentaron. Su amor por Nuestro Señor y Nuestra Santísima Madre fue un modelo para quienes la rodeaban. En sus últimos años, su vida se estructuró en torno a sus oraciones diarias y sus labores domésticas, ora et labora, creando así su propia regla religiosa doméstica. Era miembro de la Iglesia de Santa Ita, una comunidad de fe que apreciaba profundamente. Su ejemplo de vida cristiana es su mayor legado a su familia, y sin duda sus oraciones obtuvieron muchos favores para sus seres queridos. Aunque extrañaremos mucho la presencia de María Lucila en nuestras vidas, su dulce actitud, sus pequeñas y grandes muestras de cariño y hasta sus deliciosos buñuelos, sabemos que seguirá orando intensamente por nosotros en el cielo, como lo hizo aquí en la tierra. La velación tendrá lugar el jueves 28 de agosto de 4:00-8:00 pm en la Funeraria Barr, 6222 N Broadway, Chicago.. El funeral se llevará a cabo el viernes 29 de agosto en la Iglesia Católica de Santa Ita, 5500 N Broadway, Chicago. Habrá una velación en la iglesia de 11:00 a 12:00, seguida de misa a las 12:00 pm. Al finalizar la misa, María Lucila será enterrada en el Cementerio Mary Hill, 8600 N Milwaukee Ave, Niles. En lugar de flores, se pueden hacer donaciones a la familia por la memoria de Maria Lucila para ayudar a sufragar los gastos del funeral.
