Johanna "Josie" Navin Monaghan

Johanna (Josie) Navin Monaghan, cherished mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on the morning of July 25th. She had just turned 91 and was surrounded by care and love. Johanna was born in St. Louis in 1935 to Marion and Thomas Navin. Growing up, she was the youngest of three children. Gloria was her older sister by 15 years, and Tim was the middle child. From early on, she projected a fiery and free spirit. She graduated from Immaculata High School in Detroit and up then briefly attended Michigan State, leaving after her freshman year when her father was killed in a car accident. Later, she married and moved to New York, where she had three children, all of whom survive her (Gloria, Thomas, and Peter). After divorcing, she moved back to the Detroit area, where she raised her children on her own with the help of family and friends. Throughout this difficult time, Josie remained a force of nature, never giving up on her children and often providing emotional support to her friend and family network. Known to be upbeat, joyful, and supportive of others, she taught her children the importance of empathy and charity toward those who were poor and disadvantaged. Her loyalty and commitment to her family and friends were impenetrable and unstoppable. Johanna was blessed to have lifelong friends, many of whom were her “First Communion” classmates at the all-girls Gesu Catholic Elementary School and later Immaculata High School of Detroit. Throughout her life, these cherished companions visited one another, took trips, and shared the joys and hardships of their lives. These women counted on each other and loved one another unconditionally, maintaining a bond that lasted over 80 years. While Josie held many different jobs to support her family, the highlight was working as the Director of Development for Detroit’s Orchestra Hall. There, she was in her element as she promoted programs and events to support the arts within the Detroit community. Later, she held similar roles at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago and St. Vincent DePaul’s Girls School in Detroit. After retiring, Josie loved visiting her children and grandchildren. She frequently brought along her older sister, Gloria, including her in holidays, vacations, and road trips. They loved each other deeply and were wonderful companions. Josie later became Gloria’s devoted caregiver when her sister fell ill, prior to Gloria's passing from cancer in 2006. Josie’s memory will be kept alive by her children—Gloria, Peter (Rebecca), and Thomas; her grandchildren—Isabel, Violet, Jack, and Josie; her beloved nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews; and her many dear friends. Many in the family saw her as a trusted confidant who offered wise advice and love without judgment. The family would like to thank the staff and leadership team at St. Mary’s Home/ Little Sisters of the Poor in Chicago, Illinois. Their love and care for the elderly are unmatched and will be forever remembered and appreciated. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation to Little Sisters of the Poor. Interment in Mt. Elliot Cemetery, Detroit Michigan, will be private.
