Bernarda Gonzalez

Bernarda Gonzalez, 91 of Chicago, Illinois passed into death and into the arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 10, 2025. Bernarda was born on August 20, 1934, the second youngest of nine children in Espino, Puerto Rico. She met the love of her life, Andres Gonzalez at the age of seven stating, “I knew I would marry him someday.” At the age of nineteen, Bernarda married Andres( Andy) Gonzalez and moved to the United States where she would make Chicago her lifelong home. She became a mother for the first time to Jose, second time to Doris and for the last time to Andres. Bernarda was a devoted wife and mother. She also worked for Florsheim Shoes full time for several years. At the age of 67, Bernarda completed her GED to receive a high school diploma from Truman Community College. Her greatest joy was becoming a grandmother to five grandchildren and later a great grandmother to five great grandchildren. She and Andy would often make trips back to Puerto Rico during the winter months and to Dallas to visit the grandchildren. They both loved the dogs they adopted and kept in Chicago. Bernarda was known for her kindness to all her family and beyond. She had a childlike outlook filled with wonder of the world. Her family and its history meant the world to her. She would often tell stories of the past while sharing family photos of special memories from her childhood as well as her children’s. Bernarda was preceded in death by her loving husband of 68 years, Andy Gonzalez, Doris Fettes(daughter), Jose Isabel Gonzalez(father), Filomena Gonzalez(mother), her siblings, Asunción (sister),Eduardo(brother),Juana(sister),Ambrosio (brother),Anastasio (brother), Dominga (sister), Juanito(brother), Carmelo(brother), many aunts and uncles and many, many cousins. She is survived by her eldest son Jose Gonzalez of Chicago, IL, youngest son Andres Gonzalez(Brittany) of Wylie TX, grandchildren Joseph Fettes(Vanessa) of Chicago IL, Michael Fettes(Elizabeth) of Plantation, FL, Addison Gonzalez, Melissa Gonzalez, and Cristiano Gonzalez all of Wylie, TX as well as five great grandchildren—Anthony, Isabel, Jeremiah, Juliana, and Leona . Bernarda will be dearly missed by all. Services were held September 23 at St. Gertrude Catholic Church with internment immediately following.
